Grout Coverage Chart: Sq Ft per Bag by Joint Width

How far does a bag or pail of grout go? This chart puts every grout on the site on the same tile and joint, so the numbers can be compared directly: 12 x 12 x 3/8 in tile, joint filled to full tile depth.

Want bags for your own area, not square feet per bag? The tile grout calculator does the arithmetic for every product at once.

Sq ft covered by one package, by joint width

Sq ft covered by one package, by joint width. Square feet per package for 12 x 12 x 3/8 in tile (1 m² = 10.7639 sq ft). Dashes are joint widths outside the product's rated range. TEC prints its chart per pound; the figures here are for the whole bag.

Basis: 12 x 12 x 3/8 in tile with the joint filled to the full tile depth, which is the case every manufacturer's chart is printed for. Larger tiles with the same joint cover more area per bag, smaller tiles and mosaics much less, so use the calculator for your own tile size.

How joint width changes grout coverage

Grout is the only one of these materials where the thing you are filling is a volume, not an area. The joint runs between every tile, so a floor of 12 x 12 in tile has about 24 linear inches of joint per square foot, and each of those inches is as wide as the joint and as deep as the tile is thick. Widen the joint from 1/8 in to 3/8 in and you triple the volume, which is why the columns in the table drop by roughly two thirds across five joint widths.

Why the tile size matters too

Bigger tiles mean less joint per square foot. A floor of 24 x 24 in tile has half the linear joint of a 12 x 12 in floor, so the same bag covers about twice the area. Mosaics go the other way: a 2 x 2 in sheet has six times the joint length of 12 x 12 in tile, and the calculator reflects that — several products carry a separate, lower figure for small tile sizes, because the manufacturer's own chart does. That is why every figure in this table is tied to one tile: 12 x 12 x 3/8 in, joint filled to the full tile depth. If your tile is a different size, the number in the table will not be your number.

Sanded, unsanded, epoxy, pre-mixed

The table mixes four families on purpose. Cement-based sanded grouts (Custom Polyblend Plus, MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA, TEC Power Grout) are sold by weight and are the cheapest per square foot. Epoxy grouts (LATICRETE SPECTRALOCK PRO Premium, MAPEI Kerapoxy CQ, Custom CEG-Lite) are sold by volume and cost several times more per square foot, but they do not need sealing and resist staining. Pre-mixed grouts (Custom Fusion Pro, MAPEI Flexcolor CQ, LATICRETE SPECTRALOCK 1) come in a pail and are the simplest to apply. Compare them on square feet per package, then multiply by the shelf price per package to see what a floor actually costs.

Worked example: 150 sq ft of 12 x 12 x 3/8 in tile

150 sq ft plus 10% waste is 165 sq ft to grout. At a 1/8 in joint, Custom Polyblend Plus covers 346 sq ft per 25 lb bag, so 165 ÷ 346 = 0.48 bags — one bag is enough, with half of it left over. MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA at 388 sq ft per bag is 0.43 bags, also one bag. At a 3/8 in joint the same floor needs 1.39 bags of Polyblend Plus (119 sq ft per bag), so two bags. Pre-mixed MAPEI Flexcolor CQ covers 200 sq ft per gallon at 1/8 in, so 165 ÷ 200 = 0.82 gal and one 1 gallon pail covers it; at 3/8 in it drops to 67 sq ft per gallon and the job takes 2.47 gal, bought as one 2 gallon pail plus one 1 gallon pail. Epoxy is the extreme case: one 0.2 gal Mini unit of SPECTRALOCK PRO Premium covers only 39 sq ft at 1/8 in, so the same floor needs about 4.2 Mini units (0.84 gal), bought as one 0.8 gal Full unit plus one Mini.

For your own tile size, joint width and area, use the grout calculator: it holds one set of inputs and reports every product at once, so you can see the cheapest bag, pail or kit for the job rather than the one you happened to search for.
