How floor patch coverage works

Patch and skim products are sold as a bag of powder that fills a fixed volume, so the bag count depends on the thickness you trowel on far more than on the size of the room. Every row in the table above is taken from the manufacturer's own data sheet at a stated thickness, and the last column converts that to bags for 100 sq ft plus 10% waste at the reference thickness, so products can be compared on the same basis.

In practice a patch job is rarely one uniform layer. Seams, hollows, trowel ridges and old adhesive usually need more material than the surrounding floor, so measure the patched share of the floor rather than the whole room, or split the job into zones and add the results.

Choosing the thickness to enter

Most patch products cap out around 1/2 inch outside small, well-defined areas. If a whole room needs more than that, a self-leveling underlayment is the cheaper and flatter route; see the self-leveler comparison.

What is not in these calculators

Where a product is also sold as an embossing filler for old sheet vinyl, the mix usually changes (often a resin instead of water) and the yield changes with it. Those figures sit in the FAQ of the individual product page rather than in the bag calculator.
